They're teffilin, which are worn by Jewish men during morning weekday prayers. There are passages of scripture from Deuteronomy and Exodus inside the black boxes.

Sorry about the lame blog. Jameel made me do it. It was the only way I could lurk around the blogaspere and put in my 2 grush (old Israeli currency) worth.
